ALTERED Electric Skateboards by EXKATE® was formed when a few friends realized the worldwide potential of Electric Skateboarding. They come from diverse backgrounds and different age groups. From straight out of college, to working as consultants to the Action Sports Industry, to running their own successful businesses, but always keeping in touch with the California dream & lifestyle.
- A Brief History of Electric Skateboards
In the late 1990’s, Louie Finkle (aka Electric Louie) invented and patented the wireless electric skateboard. From handmade electronics, a 100% original brushed motor design, to the world’s first ‘torsion’ trucks – Louie’s first boards were truly revolutionary. Back then, most things had cords, and lithium battery technology was still in its infancy. Louie combined wireless technology, speed and power with stability and reliability. Exkate was born. The only downside? Price. Back then, an X-24 set you back around $1200.
In 2006, a group of friends realized the potential of Louie’s board, which was clearly way ahead of its time, and acquired the company. They combined their talents and set out to improve the product line and take it to the next level. With this move an exciting new era for skateboarding had begun.
Fast forward to today. After thousands of boards sold, 6 generations of updates, countless customer suggestions, and new advancements in technology, we bring you the Altered line up.
We’ve updated our technology a lot since Louie’s original design – silent digital wireless electronics, lithium batteries, bigger and softer wheels, lighter boards, and custom deck and motor options. But while a lot has changed, Louie’s original design is still the foundation of our boards. Why? Because it works. Sure, there are other ways to control an electric skateboard, but none are as intuitive and simple as our patented wireless controller design. Sure, there are ways to make things smaller and lighter, but we love electric skateboarding and we want as many people as possible to be able to ride. Smaller boards are not only less stable at speed and unable to handle anything except well maintained asphalt, but they’re also a lot more expensive. And unlike all the cheap, Chinese knock-offs out there, we own and control 100% of our tooling and manufacturing.
At Altered, we love electric skateboarding and we’re very proud of our line up.
